One of the things that all beginning guitarists should have at their disposal is a book of popular easy guitar songs. There are lots of good ones to choose from. But the key feature is to find one with lots of songs that you (and your friends) recognize and can sing along with. Armed with a book of classic guitar songs, you can easily improve your guitar skills, amuse your friends, and have a whole lot of fun.
As Bono from U2 used to say, "All I have is a red guitar, three chords and the truth". I don't know if a red guitar helps, but there are tons of guitar songs that only need three chords. If you can learn the D, A, and E, chords you can learn to play literally thousands of popular easy guitar songs.

Learning a couple of the old favorites can be a great way for a beginning guitar player to build up skill and confidence. Most of the songs are popular because they are both easy to sing and easy to play. If you learn to play some of the old standby tunes, you will have no shortage of people willing to sing and have fun with you.
One of the fun things you can do with a book of old popular songs is to take a song that everybody knows and then rewrite the lyrics. Take the old tune and write a new song. Make up lyrics about your friends, about where you work, or about funny things that happen to you and your friends.
A friend of mine did this and performed her song at a birthday party. She took a famous tune and made up her own lyrics with lots of inside jokes. Before long she had the whole party singing along and laughing hysterically. It turned into a really fun evening for all of us, especially the guest of honor.
